Victorian burr walnut circular dining table
Victorian burr walnut circular dining table
This Victorian burr walnut circular dining table was made circa 1860 NOW SOLD
The table has many uses, it can be used as a dining table, a centre table or it can be used in a bay window. Wherever you choose to use it, it will look fantastic as it gives such a dramatic look. The top with its stunning book matching veneers. Book matching is the art of mirroring the veneers so that they make a symmetrical pattern.
The top sits on a solid walnut turned and carved column, going down to a small circular platform with 3 cabriole legs with china wheel castors below.
The legs with fine leaf carving at the knee and finishing with a delicate curl at the toe end.
This is a table that was at the higher end of the quality scale when it was first commissioned, the cabinetmaker would have spent time selecting the fine burr walnut veneer so that it would give the best effect once it was laid on the solid mahogany timber that was the sub-frame.
The circular top with its end grain solid walnut moulding around the outer edge. Applying edge moulding is a time consuming job for the cabinetmaker, as he applied 3-4 inch strips of walnut to the edge before running a moulding plane around the circular top to get the final ogee shape before finishing and polishing. A lower quality table would have the solid timber that the veneer is glued to overhanging the edge, and then moulded, before being disguised perhaps by black lacquer or a colouring technique to hide this lesser finish.
