Here we have this Merchants chest, made of hardwood and then iron bound.
This chest would have been made for a wealthy merchant to transport valuables along the trade routes in the East.
Carried on wagons or by boat these needed to be durable to face the rigors of the arduous journeys the merchant would have to take, and so the strong iron straps and hasps were fitted.
This example has carrying handles to each end and stands on turned feet.
The top has a lid that opens 3/4 width to reveal a large storage area and a fitment of small drawers
Not only providing great storage, this chest also makes a wonderful coffee table.
